BiggTim
Edit 17 February, 2020: I decided to make this a WIP too, since I actually started the project, so please see the latest post. Anyone know where i might find a 1/32 Klimov M-105 engine? I'm toying with the idea of making a Russian P-40 with one. RLWP
Could you use the nose of a Special Hobby YAK-3? Try searching for VK-105 as well as M-105: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klimov_M-105 Richard Edited April 12, 2018 by RLWP BiggTim
Martinnfb
Wouldn't it be only a question of adding up exhaust and bumps on the top, plus the prop? like begun in 1/

BiggTim
Yes, as long as you leave it closed up, it's just exhaust, bulges, spinner, and prop, which I will probably do. I just thought it might be fun to open it up! esarmstrong
BiggTim
Martinn, or anyone else, got any more photos of P-40 M-105s? Dang hard to come by it seems.
Guest Clunkmeister
Martin, I'm sure, is busy digging through dusty Kremlin photo archives in the sub, sub basement of the main records building. I can guarantee you that if it exists, he will find it. Whether he can publish it is another story.
BiggTim
Exactly why I singled him out. I figured he'd have the right contacts!!!
BiggTim
I was looking at my P-40E kit again today, made me think of this old thread. Would anyone with a 1/32 Yak-3 or Yak-9 kit be willing to measure the spinner for me? I need the diameter and overall length in order to see if I can make one or find one that will work for an M-105 powered Russian P-40. If I can figure that out, it will help me decide what to build. Thanks!!
esarmstrong
Wasn't the M-105 a licensed version of the Hispano Suiza 12 cylinder engine used on almost all in-line engine French fighters of WWII? BiggTim and Alain Gadbois
BiggTim
Very possibly, yes. I know they were at least closely related. I'm just not sure that the French planes used the same spinner as the Russian ones. I'm reasonably sure that the ones the Russians put in the P-40 used the same spinners and props as the Yaks, since that's what they had available. Thanks!! It is possible to measure the proportionnal difference between the Russian spinner and the P-40 opening in the photo above and deduct the dimension needed for your project in 1/32. To me it looks like a LaGG-3 spinner and prop but could be the same as the other types you mentioned. Alain BiggTim

Yes but it was much developed in the Soviet Union. The French mechanics were happy to find an engine they were familiar with when they went to the Soviet Union with the Normandie regiment. Thanks!! I am presently building the SH Yak 3, and I have a (presently) spare backing plate, spinner and propeller blades. Once I've finished the model and know I don't need them, you're welcome to them if you can use them. Personally, I'd love SH or CMK to do a resin Klimov engine for this kit, like they did for the Tempest. If they did, I'd definitely buy another.
