Vynce804
Hi All, For my first WIP thread I have decided to build the Trumpeter 1/32 F8 crusader. I've always liked this jet and have even been lucky enough to have seen French navy examples flying. Below are my inspiration pics. I'm planning to finish the model in the colours of VMFA 235 from around 1966. I really like the splash of colour the markings provide. And also the weathered and well used appearance of the jets. As well as the basic kit I have some resin parts, but don't know how many I will use yet. The decals are on their way and I still need a pilot figure but getting one shouldn't be a problem The bombs and racks are sourced from a Tamiya F4 kit and luckily the kit comes with Zuni rockets and this was a nice surprise as I was wondering what do do about them. In a break from tradition I'm not starting with the cockpit and will start with the wing as I hear the slats and flaps can be a challenge!! Finn
Good luck with your project however one little detail, during the early days they used the MBR - McDonnel Bomb Rack which was an early version of the MER, the most notable feature was the lack of an aerodynamic nose fairing: Also they did use WWII/Korea era bombs: If you want to do some research of what the squadron did in Vietnam: http://www.recordsofwar.com/vietnam/usmc/VMF%20(AW)%20-%20235.htm Jari MikeC, tucohoward, Marcel111 and 2 others

Vynce804
Hi All, Quick update. I have made a start on the wing ... etc. And glued all the main components. All went together with no problem, though the locating pins could have been a bit bigger for a more positive fit. The only issue was slicing my thumb with a modelling knife during parts cleanup!! The victory decals have arrived and are very nice. I'm spoilt for choice as there are quite a few really great marine crusader schemes, but think I will stick with my initial choice. Next up is cleaning up of all the glued joints and then adding pe to the wing. I had always thought to model it with wings outer panels unfolded but not sure now? Finally thanks to Finn for the added info and great reference pics much appreciated and will come in very handy. Cheers Matt F`s are my favs, MikeC and tucohoward

Finn
Matt one other thing if you plan to go with the 235,in that time period they had Aero 3 launchers for the Zuni/Sidewinder while the kit comes with LAU-7 launchers. Here is one that had a LAU-7 (bottom) and a AERO-3 (top), compare the back end of the launchers: http://www.gstatic.com/hostedimg/6ea44fa302f2dcea_large Jari
Vynce804
Hi All, Quick update. The after a lot of sanding of slats and flaps the wing is almost done! It's starting to look ok and after a little more work some rescribing and a coat of primer it should be ok. I have added the Eduardo pe to the wing and even though most will be hidden when completed I know it is there! Ive also looked at the resin main gear bay but unfortunately even though the detail is great the fit isn't great as it is a little short when offered up to the kit.... I'm still not sure what I'm going to do and may use the kit parts and leave the resin for an f8 j I have in the stash. Joel_W
Really nice progress on all those flying surfaces. The resin main wheel well looks darn good, sure hope that you decide to go with it. Joel
ClumsyDude
Matt, it's looking great. That is super frustrating about the wheel wells, I am guessing it's Aires? They seem to use a type of resin which holds beautiful detail, but it also shrinks badly, and that is an enormous pain on something as big as a 1/32 jet. I'm with Joel, hope you find a way to make it work. If you check out Chuck's Hornet thread he deals with the same problem on a different kit ... plus it's a really entertaining read! http://www.arcforums.com/forums/air/index.php?s=22611e93955a56b7700067a9bca30d20&showtopic=196766&st=0 Couldn't find the LSP link for that one, sorry. Jim Barry
This thing is going to be amazing. The F-8 gets a little lost in the shuffle but it deserves some love and attention.
