miked
I will be starting the Revell version of the F-4E "Mig Killer" kit in a few weeks, I am not to fond of the markings on this version. I like the Jolly Roger markings better, but what would it take to do the conversion and is there any aftermaket decals for this version. Thanks for help, Mike
Barry
Mike, The Revell kit as you stated is an F-4E with the "gun nose" and in US service was exclusive to the Air Force. The "Jolly Rogers VF-84" is a US Navy squadron and when they operated the Phantom its was first the F-4B then the F-4J. To modify the Revell F-4E to a B or J would require replaceing the entire nose from the windshield forward. There would be many other changes needed as well. Decal are currently available from CAM Decals for the later style markings. Barry
miked
Thanks Barry. Is there a conversion availible or can I modify the kit parts? Mike
Barry
Mike, There is no conversion available to accomplish what you want to do. You can modify the kit but you will need a completely new nose that looks nothing like the nose on the E model. There is also the wing which has Leading Edge Slats that were not present on the B or J flown by the “Jolly Rogers”. I know of an effort underway to produce a conversion to convert the Revell E to a non gun nose hard wing but have no idea as to when it will be completed and become available. No time soon of that I'm reasonable certain but one never knows. Barry
genedig65
There is a way to convert Revell's recent F-4E to a Navy F-4J. The "conversion kit" you'll need is a 1970s vintage Revell F-4J. This supplies the nose, hard wing leading edge, and Navy style slatted tailplanes. Best of all an old F-4J can be had for about 15-20 dollars. Now granted, it won't be a 100% accurate model, but I built one like that around ten years ago. To get past the F-4E cockpit vs F-4J cockpit issue, I used the old Revell crew figures (I respositined their arms and heads to a more candid pose)and a closed canopy. I also built the aircraft on a stand to simulate an inflight pose, thus bypassing the landng gear problem.
