Squall67584
I'm looking for either generic decals or stencils to paint uncommon squadron letters on the side of a model. I'm not wanting to make the model a replica of a particular plane, just my own idea from my imagination. The only decals or stencils I can find are of "real world" planes. If I could find a decal sheet of just two sets of the alphabet I'd be in business.
LSP_Ray
Decals Carpena offered letters and numbers in different sizes in Sky and Med Sea Grey. Microscale at one time offered letters in different sizes and styles and colors. I believe Hobby Decal offers some modern letters in a couple different sizes for lo-viz grey as a rub-on. I have also seen vinyl masks for different letters offered by Black Magic and probably others. You can print your own decals relatively easily with a laser printer and laser printer decal paper in black to any size or style you want. White, you're going to need an ALPS printer. Kinda depends what you are exactly looking for?
Squall67584
Oh, I forgot to even say what plane they were for, d'oh! Its for a metal finish P-47, but I'm also looking for Spitfire/Hurricane markings too. I'll look into the ones you mentioned to see if they fit the bill. CharlesMetz
Squall, Another way to do this is to: (1) purchase a sheet of dry-transfer letters of appropriate size and style at a stationery store; (2) paint your model's rear fuselage (or whatever) the color of the letters you want; (3) after this paint is thoroughly dry, apply the relevant dry-transfer letters to your model, rubbing them down carefully but throughly; (4) paint your model, using no more paint than necessary; and (5) after that paint is thoroughly dry, remove the dry-transfer letters with tape. Voila! I've used this method on camouflaged models but not on aircraft with a "natural metal" finish. A sturdy metallic paint — e.g., Floquil Silver — may be necessary in the latter case. Squall67584
That's an interesting technique. I think I've found a set of alphabet decals on microscale.com that should work. Hopefully I can get to work on this project now that all of the kinks have been worked out!
Edgar Brooks
You'll find the letters easier (less difficult?) to remove, if you use matt paint, for your code letters. Gloss paint can be a nightmare. Edgar
SvenJT
This site has some great masks to use for 32nd. http://www.gatorsmask.com/aircraft.html Good luck with your project. Cheers and fun modeling, John
