Chris Braid
Just looking to paint up a NMF and want to use the Montex Masks for teh markings. Does anyone have any experience of painting over Alclad? If so any hint, tips and pitfalls to be aware of would be much appreciated. Many thanks, Chris
smithery
You can paint over Alclad without issue, as the finish is rock hard. Given that Alclad is a lacquer, painting with an enamel or acrylic paint will not harm the finish in any way.
ChrisS
I just masked and sprayed Tamiya and Polyscale acrylics over Alclad II with no ill effects whatsoever.
Chris Hannover - Germany
I use Gunze Acrylics, and over Alclad you need several thin layers. But all in all it works out ok for me. HTH, Chris
Scalephantomphixer
On my Dakota I painted Alclad over aluminum foil. The adherence is very weak, and liftoff with masking tape is almost guaranteed. On other plastic surfaces I had no liftoff ever.

Fancherello
Hi I'll add something after a fex trials with alclads. If you need to puts masks on Alclad, be aware that there are two types of Alclads. The "shiny ones" ( HIghly Polished Alu, Chrome, Stainless Steel ) need an undercoat to bear masks without peeling. The other ones ( the rest of the range ) are more solid and can resist masks without undercoat. For both types thin layers will give a stronger result than a wet coat which tends to create a fragile skin. To be secure, I pass masks on the inside of the hand to get them less sticky, especially black masks such as Montex or Black Magic from CEdge. about the undercoat: rather than choosing a black enamel or a black acrylic depending of the Alclad tint, I use two spray cans from Tamiya: AS-12 and Light Gun Metal ( TS-?? ). I chose the light one for medium metal intensity, and the dark one for high shine. They use as a fine surfacer, and helps fragile tint stick on the model. I just polish them before spraying the alclad here's an example of the result I got on this 1:48 model ( that I finished yesterday, to get back into 1:32 !! ) bye Fanch
