Now look at what you made me do Kev my virtual friend, a P-51H with a Griffon up front. Livery? Either a roundy rounder (racer) or British colours. As far as the noesart institute can discern, a 'Helena' never made it to England.

      I see a P-51H in LSP's future!

                             Thank you

Hi y'all,

  H2_zpsnl2uo1i2.jpg

  H3_zpsgjpefbwi.jpg

I would like to also make a merlin powered pony in National Guard livery so I'll cobble together the cowling from this, that and the other.

Revell made the top cowl for me. Fits rather well. H4_zpsx25fkayu.jpg H5_zps37kjqtpy.jpg

I'm using two pieces of bass wood held together with double sided tape, maximum fuselage width, 36" or 1.125" in 32nd scale.( 1 inch of real airplane = 1/32 of my pony)

Thanks to Harold, XMH53, Vandy, Tnarg and my quality control managers, Harvey and MD Jack.   Thank you!

             Thanks everyone!

Real one? Do you have a picture of a 'H' airframe with a Griffon up front?   That's a 'D' airframe.

   This is a 'H' airframe.........H1_zpswegdgsi6.jpg

     .

Ive seen PM several times up close...................

There isnt much of anything of the original D airframe left including having the entire empennage, fuse and most all of the stock D panels replaced.

Precious Metal is a P-51D. Wings (outer panels removed at the production break, shortened ailerons), fuselage, and horizontal are all P-51D. The firewall is moved aft for the Griffon blower, the sheet metal above the upper longeron is modified for the canopy and the fin and rudder is from a P-51H, so it's almost all P-51 firewall back. Until Thom started racing it hard it had a stock D model doghouse and scoop.

Just to set the record straight. A lot of people think it's like Miss Ashley II, which it very much is not. It was a much different airplane.

At this stage in her career, saying Thoms plane is a D model P-51 is like saying an adult 400lb lion is a cat. True statement, but not exactly just your average "cat".

Seen her many times up close and personal as well as Miss Ashley II. Saw MAII break up in 99 at Reno, and im not sure there would be ANY confusing of the two unless your just not into the fastest motor-sport in the world.

With her Lear wing along with empannage and all the other mods, really the only thing the two have in common were the contra rotating prop, but there was even quite a difference between the two as PMs contra unit is out of a Shackleton.

Ive seen her fly every year including 2013 where Thom finally drove to to a standing finish in 5th and Steve H got his first victory with Voodoo (YAY!!!!) .   Shame that single judge DQed her last year, as flight testing from our corner judge way out on turn 3 seemed to think things were going quite swimmingly.

You said;

"There isnt much of anything of the original D airframe left including having the entire empennage, fuse and most all of the stock D panels replaced."

This is incorrect and I described the airplane's componentry above. I'm not arguing, it is what it is.

I know the Whittingtons, and the Levitz family, I was there when it all went down, I saw PM when it bellied into Lake Lemon in '88. I know what it is. And what it isn't.

Yeah, Yeah, my parents competed in the Reno Air Races in the 70's, I was at the races from 1970 until 2009 when I quit going due to lack of enthusiasm, I raced there in my own racer in '98 and '99, I saw Gary killed in the break-up of MAII. Sitting in the stands with my wife with my race pilot passes around my neck... So what? It doesn't have anything to do with the fact that PM is a modified P-51D, and it's empennage IS a D model with an H model vertical, it's fuselage IS a P-51 D and it's wing IS a P-51D.

Back in the good old days there was a doctor in Iowa City that raced a Mustang, Burns Byram. Skinny, Van Dyke, big Playboy bunny on the tail. He was a character. Do you go that far back? He was killed in the early eighties ferrying a Mustang back from SA.
