Trumpeter 1/32 EA-18G VAQ-141 Shadowhawks

Fellas,
Here is the latest monster, the Trumpeter 32 scale EA-18G Growler.  This will be an OOB build with the exception of the Steel Beach resin update (as we all know it is not a true Growler in the box).  Missing are all of the antennas on the fuselage that make it a Growler!  and a set of Verlindin seats , which I know are not exactly the correct seat.  Having built the "F" last year i know  where the kits hang ups are and should make for a fun build.  Sorry for the crappy pics.

your basic Gunze 317 with some black/brown post shading and Tamiya Flat Black XF-1.  The control stick is just in there for looks. The notch on the top of the stick grip has been fixed...

dry brushed the consoles with Tamiya XF-24 which is close to Euro 1 gray on the consoles and added a wash with AK interactive panel line wash for gray camouflages.  I then post shaded with some Tamiya uber thin Black/Brown mix that I made and shaded the corners add depth and shadows.  I then painted the Instrument panels and side consoles with XF-69 NATO Black.

Then I started picking out various knobs and switches with different colors, red, yellow, gray.  I dry brushed the Instrument panels with Gunze light gray to get the buttons and switches on the MFD's to pop.  i then picked out a few switches here and there and then focused on the screens of the displays.

Okay, now its time to do the screens on the displays.  The Growler has newer type displays that don't really have the deep/bright green hue that older CRT's have.  so to replicate then hue on the newer displays I painted the screen with Vallejo black gray thinned with AK thinner to get it to flow nice and easy.  Once that was dry , I then hit them with Tamiya clear green.  My bottle of clear green was crap and i got a few specks on the screens that I didn't catch until it was dry.  So, not liking that i mixed the Vallejo black gray with Vallejo green/gray? (i'll have to check) again, thinned with AK thinner and allowed to flow in the displays.  after it was dry, I thin thinned some future with Windex and allowed it to flow  onto each display and allowed them to dry.  Damn clear green got crap on the displays now I have to figure out a way to remove them.......

I dry brushed the tub with Tamiya light Sea Gray and flat white and Gunze light gray.  Still need to add a few scuffs and chips to it and paint the control stick and the pit will be done.

Started on the airframe changes.  Using the Steel Beach set i added the SATCOM antenna on the spine and blended it all together:

Not the best but i will add a panel to the top of it and hopefully it dresses it up some.

Also, one of the issues with the kit is the top and bottom fuselage halves don't fit very well and spreaders were needed to elimate the step between the fuselage halves:

You've triggered my interest for a seat in the front row.  I love everything

that prowls and growls and has Navy or Marine markings on it.

Great start !!!!!

Thanks man, I have to figure out how to fix those displays where the clear green got screwed up

Fellas,

Small update today.  Started filling the gun vents on the bottom as the Growler has no gun so the vents have to go.  Also started placing the underside antennas on the fuselage.  This build is probably not going to be as in depth as Lothars, this is a commission build for a friend and I dont have enough time to do everything.

Fellas,

Okay , time to knock the dust off of this thing.  Got the vert stabs attached and fared in.  They had a pretty good gap around the base of them that needed to me taken care of.   I am going to see what all the hype is about black basing and will give it a go on this build.

Fellas,

Worked some on the Growler.  I was looking at the kit and the kit does not give you a complete HUD.  There is no spot for the lens on the glare shield.  So, I took a drill bit and made a depression and filled it with signal amber enamel paint.  So, i went to dry fit the windscreen and the HUD impacted the windscreen.  So I made new HUD frames from a resin set from the Academy F-18 build and made the glass for the HUD from overhead projector sheets.  Anyway on to the pics:

Time for an update:  Got the black basing all done and did the marbling with light gray and some white and a little brown around the engine areas, also re worked the hud as the kit does not give you the lens in the coaming, so i drilled a depression and filled it with signal amber paint, and added new HUD frames from an old cutting edge hornet cockpit and use transparency film for the glass panels in the HUD:

Update part 2

Started laying down the Light and Dark Ghost Grays, covering the black basing.  My only thing is that Model Master dark and light ghost grays are so close you cant really tell them apart.  I will have to go back over the demarcation lines with the Dark Ghost Gray with some black added.  I don't normally use Model Master and since I had it laying around I would give it a go.  Any way, on to the pics:
