As a SECOND entry into the 1/16 armor realm, I have the excellent Heng Long 1/16 Abrams M1A2. This has outstanding detail and a high level of accuracy, with only a few concessions to it's RC functionality:

Of course I cannot leave well enough alone. In addition to removing molded shortcuts like handles, wires, etc, I will be adding the anti-skid texture, and the biggy: a backdate to the M1A1HC "All Bout Da Bones" Iraq 2003.

Cheers, Tom

I've upgraded the basic kit with metal pivot arms, springs, wheels, idlers, sprockets, and tracks (with rubber pads), and added a 360 degree rotation to the turret. My modifications so far:

Drilled lightening holes in the sprockets:

Replace molded wires on the front deck:

Added casting numbers to the turret with shaved sprue:

And to the rear deck:

And made a start on biggest modification, a scratchbuilt cupola (shown with a 1/35 counterpart):

Cheers, and Happy Holidays,  Tom

Excellent, I'll be watching.

I have been wondering if the Heng Long offering was a good starting point for a large scale Abrams as it is the only game I have found.

Barry, this is totally worth it! It rivals the Tamiya kits for accuracy, and can be found for half the price of their static 1/16 tanks.

Thanks, John! It sure is big and fun!

With the Trumpeter 1/16 Abrams coming out, might be worth seeing if they do the other variants as well.

Large scale tanks are always fun, will be looking forward to the conversion here.

Thanks, Matt! So far so good! I'm also curious about Trumpeter's announced T-72 release.

Cheers, Tom

Awesome! I was talking tanks with Paul the other day and the subject of the Abrams came up...

I was pining for a 2A6M(Can) and the talk turned to these. With all the love the Leo has been getting with kit makers lately, it's good to see someone doing an Abrams.

Ernie, some parts of this build are stretching my limits: I've done a fair amount of scratchbuilding but nothing like a 1/16 commanders station! At the same time I highly recommend this kind of modeling therapy. Glad I listened to that couple sitting on my shoulder!

Cheers, Tom

Hey Tom,
I just can't keep it in anymore. A while back, I had the opportunity to acquire this slightly used Tamiya 2A6. It is apart, but 100% complete and operable with the addition of a radio and battery.
We MUST get together for some tank running and shooting one day next year :)

Somewhere down the line, it will prove to be a very suitable base for a 2A6M(Can) conversion. It will be made into a model of one of the Canadian Army Leopards that was attached to and served with the USMC through the Afghan War.
I was truly blessed to receive this model, and once my Sherman is done, this will be a fairly simple build. The goofy camo gotta go, that's for sure!
The rubber band tracks, idlers, and swing arms will be replaced with Impact metal parts, and the road wheels will be replaced with those with sealed ball bearings. Other than that, add the distinctive Canadian turret additions, engine armor, slat armor, and antenna mounts, and we'll have a winnah!
Your Abrams will have a foe, my friend :)

Main gun's all there, complete with recoil unit. It needs the barrel stabilizer though. Enough room for a BB gun... Hmmmmmm......
8D9B8B3B-3AC5-47C0-B342-DCB2D19FD733_zps
Multifunction unit is present and accounted for
21567A23-869B-4942-8B56-52897C85D594_zps
Sound unit and the Duplex drive system is all there. Turret rotator motor and elevation mechanism are all there, as are pretty much all the missing parts from the pictures. This is an AWESOME starting point for a Canuck 2A6M.

Tom, I don't mean to hijack, so I'll end it, but this is far enough out where I won't start a thread yet.
Just know that you, Paul, and others have me getting gung-ho on this tank thing...
This needs plenty more work than your Abrams, my friend :)

Outstanding! That will be one uber-cool build, and I will be watching out for it! I will be curious to see what you do with the slat armor and the Barracuda camo mats. Bring it to the party!

Cheers, Tom

Uber cool? Awesome, Tom.

I was thinking the exact same thing about the Abrams. When I served, there were plenty of Leo C1s around, but I never had much to do with the Abrams, and of course, the Leo 2 came out long after I took my release...

I'm gonna be following this Abrams build closely..

Ernie
