What printer is best for producing in-house decals?

You just have to buy blank decal sheets. There are several brands. They exist in clear of white. Clear is for stencils or other kind of markings that need to let the painting visible, white if for markings that need white color, as no printer is able to print white. But if you print decals on a white sheet, they must be cut out. Some may be better for laser printer, others for ink jet printers.

You dont need anything else. You can make you own design with any drawing or picture software (Coreldraw, Illustrator, photoshop or any other). Then you put your blank decal sheet in the printer and you print. Obviously, you can print only a small area and reprint the sheet another time.

I have tried the Xtradecals clear decal sheet, printed with a laser Xerox printed. The decal is very soft and ultra thin, almost invisible. But they are more tricky to use than most kit decals, precisely because they are very soft and thin. The printing quality mostly depend of the printer (and the drawing resolution), i guess. But it would be difficult to get such a good quality as on good AM decals. That can be just a nice alternative to make an available scheme, or replace a damaged decal, or make some missing markings in your set.
