She has never built a model before. It's the little Sherman caricature tank from Meng. She thinks it's really cool. I told her about the IPMS contest in Austin, and she wanted to go. She got a King Tiger model while there (Dragon, with turned brass 88mm shells, individual link tracks, etc.) She wanted to try Zimmerit, so I bought some Milliput. We made up a test section on some sheet styrene and used the edge of a lid from a Tamiya paint jar. It looks good!

Oh yeah- Mom just turned 70. Pretty cool.

OK, got a few pics. It's in progress, which has been slow. Another hobby has been taking up a lot of her time; gardening. She had me mix up some Bacillus Thuringiensis (natural bug spray) so she can spray for caterpillars tomorrow.

Anyway-

It's wearing Tamiya spray can primer. She will work on eliminating gaps tomorrow. There was a pretty big one on the turret. That was filled with CA. The tank will get Tamiya spray can Olive drab, then weathering with pigments, oils, and acrylics. She's having fun but this kit is TOO small. Probably equals about 1/72 scale for its size.

We watched a program about D-Day to the Battle of the Bulge. It was interesting to see Sherman variants and German tanks on film. Nice footage of a King Tiger in Ambush camo going around a corner on a city street. Also saw a German vehicle with that weird late-war scheme that looked like a bunch of overlapping circles.

She's looking forward to building something bigger and more detailed. Next up is the 1/35 King Tiger. I have also offered her my Tamiya 1/25 Tiger 1 and Hobby Boss 1/16 Tiger 1. I hope she doesn't want my Tamiya 1/16 King Tiger. If so, I'd give it up. She's done plenty for me, and those kits have been sitting around for a while.

She wants to build a 1/35 scale diorama. I don't think she will go for my idea of getting a 1/72 figure and painting him like a leprechaun, with armed Germans making him give up the pot o' gold.

Awesome!  Keep her busy! Buy her a stash!!  As a son with an 83yo mother in assisted living, keeping her mind and hands busy is one of the best things you can do for a parent.  Unfortunately Mom only stays busy playing those stupid junk mail sweepstakes by sending them thousands of dollars, $40 at a time.  I can talk to her until I'm blue in the face, I have shown her news articles, shows on 20/20, co-workers experiences with their parents.  And she still believes what these scammers are telling her.

Perhaps some of the other 1/25 tanks would be suitable?

My 87year old mum is quite an expert on WW1 having researched her uncle who died on the Canal du Nord, end of September 1918. I wonder if a Takom Mk IV might interest her! As a retired art and ceramic teacher, she is very aware of 'making' skills, but I fear her slightly failing sight might be an issue.

I might run it past her though!!

My Father told me two things would happen as I got older.
I can't remember either of them....

She looked at a Takom Mk IV at the show, but didn't like the price. Also- in the contest, someone entered a "steampunk" Mk IV Tadpole. It had a boiler, smokestack, and coal compartment. It was kinda cool. I'll upload a few pics sometime soon.

Speaking of WWI, here is a scratchbuilding project of mine. It's 1/12 scale.

Don't make a cool old lady like that waste her time on self-made Zim. Cavalier resin Zimmerit or better yet, Atak.
