Hall Bulldog Racer

Looks fantastic! The more I see of these old racers the more I want to try one. I'm a bit scared of those tricky looking paint schemes though. Can't wait to see how yours turns out.

You don't have to be scared of the old racers.

There are a few racer kits with a very simple paint scheme of one colour. :frantic:

...But they more than compensate for this by being a difficult build, because they're old: :ph34r:

 

Williams Caudron Racer: overall french blue

Williams Schoenfeld Firecracker: overall Canary Yellow (watch this space...)

Lindberg Laird Turner Meteor: overall aluminium dope

 

Anyway,

Back to the Bulldog racer.

As Wiggy has raced alongside, I have to post some pictures as well! :P

 

My book "Racing planes and air races, Vol. III" by Reed Kinert confirms what I read somewhere on the internet,

that the Bulldog racer used an early version of the PW Wasp without a ignition ring up front.

 

So the engine has to look like this:

This is my Williams 1/8 Wasp engine I build about 25 years ago.

The pictures show black pushrods and a darker grey crank case than on this one.

....and here's where I am now:

The wing struts are in place.

The propeller awaits its coat of Alclad before the 2-position variable pitch control mechanism is added from scratch.

The kit pushrods were fiddled to the cylinder heads as they were already there. Gaps were filled with white glue.

Sometime in its life on the Hall Bulldog racer, the engine got straight exhaust pipes,

so I fashioned them from plastic pipe material.

 

After installation of the engine the ignition wires will be installed conform my big Wasp model.

 

The finish is nearby!!

Hey Man, nice work getting those kit pushrods all the way to the rocker boxes.

Mine were way short the first time I built my motor.

Your Pratt & Whitney is looking great.

Here's the engine installed on the aircraft:

The cowling was subsequently push fitted on the engine and fixed to the rocker covers with a few dabs of superglue.

The pictures on the aforementioned internet site could be enlarged sufficiently to get an idea of the construction of the adjusteable pitch mechanism.

 

So I scratchbuilt it on the existing kit propeller:

I'd like to see more pics of your "adjustable pitch" prop.

I've put in a request to the replica builder for some more pics as well.

Simply can't believe I gotta' rework my motor AGAIN! :speak_cool:

Very well done my friend. You can be proud of that one.

These little Bulldogs are quite the challenge- and you made it look easy. :bow:

 

I'm afraid I still have a little way to go yet.

After I rework the prop, :BANGHEAD2: I gotta' do the oil and exhaust blow-by.

Soon enough, I'll squeeze the motor into the cowling, add the exhaust pipes and mount the whole unit.

 

This has been such a "hoot" having TWO Bulldogs being build-up at the same time.

I'm sure it'll be a while till that happens again on LSP. What a "Dog fight"!

Make sure this is not your first, last and only contribution to LSP Wiggy! I'd love to see you build something else in 1/32 (+) and share it with us.

It was indeed pure fun to build the same model simultaneously and exchanging information. :punk:

 

Wiggy, I suggest you put the engine on the fuselage first, before fixing the cowl on it.

There is no positive location for the cowl other than a push fit,

so its easier to line it up with the fuselage.

 

And I agree with Kev, I'd love to see you build something else in large scale too and share it with us! :)
