Trumpeter's F-105G - What do I need to know?

Hey all - 

 

I just grabbed one of these kits - been after one for a while but a buddy had one at a price that I just couldn't pass up. 

I've got a couple schemes in mind, but more on that later. 

 

I've done some searching on the main site and the forum, and came across some articles online. 

Generally seen a few things - the gear has to be replaced, and that's being sorted accordingly. 

There's some shape issues with the radome and the fin and general consensus is the cockpit sucks.

 

Does anyone have first hand experience fitting an Aires pit into this kit? Or a Black Box pit? 

Can I get away with just seats? 

Also - how do the resin wheel bays fit?

 

I know Cutting Edge did replacements for the fin and radome, but those can be hard to find. I hesitate to buy GT resins parts because I've heard mixed reviews. 

 

Markings will probably come from Zotz with with some self printing because it doesn't appear anyone has ever done a sheet for the airframe I have in mind.

I'm currently building the -D, Anthony. Check out GT Resins for radome and fins. As far as the gear bays, the Aires fit nicely, BUT the gear attachment point is much weaker than the as-molded part. Once you thin the bays down, there's not much to hold the metal strut. I'll be reinforcing mine with JB Weld.

Here's what I know.  You could probably get away with seats only, but I'm probably going whole hog on the pit, just because.

 

You NEED G Factor gear for this thing, period. The kit gear WILL be wobbly and WILL collapse..

 

As for GT Resin. It's the best there is. Between GT for the US stuff and Zacto for the Russian stuff, you're pretty much covered.  Gary has an F-105G Super Set available which includes pretty much everything for the airframe, including the fin. There are no canopies available for the G, so you'll need to use the kit glass. The shape issues aren't really noticeable with the canopies up, so you'll be good to go.

Trust GT Resin. I've used Gary's stuff several times and it's top quality and it fits. Gary's a stand up guy, and if there's an issue, he'll be there for you. He's also a sponsor here on LSP, so buy with confidence.

 

 

As far as Gear wells, no, I wouldn't touch them. You need to thin the resin and wing to within an inch of their lives, and they still almost don't fit. Plus the attachment points are non existent.

 

And yes, Zotz decals are the way to go unless you're using masks.

True dat, Bill.  I've never figured out why you'd use gear bays on a huge model you'll never move. You certainly can't flip it over that easily, and a bit of wire to busy up the bays will go miles to help them.

You guys are to kind, and quit honestly a little over the top!    Yes, we have the F-105 F and G super sets,  AGM-45 Shrike Missiles and AGM-78 STD Missile to dress it up.   I am building a G and in addition I agree on the G-Factor gear, along with the Aries Cockpit and Wheels wells.   Squadron also makes a Pit that is nice, but the Aires is my favorite for the PE instrument panels vs the cast ones that you either paint or scrape clean for PE.  The problem with the Squadron using PE is that the Eduard PE is sized for the kit panel which is way to tall, where the Aires panel is sized correctly and comes with their own PE.

 

Lets not forget those gorgeous Fisher Wheel/Tires set and Quick boost side aux air intakes.  Oh.... and lots of time, patience, and paint!!!!!!!

The ongoing problem which has perenially stalled my own F-105G project is the cold mould lines running through the transparencies - was this malaise corrected on more recent editions?

This is something you may need to check on your own kit.

 

Anyone have the address for the Trumpeter spare parts service? Wondering if there are replacements in their catalogue ?

 

If the postage is good I'm after the GT Resin canopy hood interior framing, which I rate as essential for this kit - once the right clear parts are to hand

Somewhat surprised and very disappointed at your statement regarding paucity and respectfully disagree.  GT Resin is a sponsor here of what is one of the most active vendor forums on LSP and supports the site with our time, treasure, and in bringing in new members to LSP through our products.   In speaking of reviews, neither you or any other moderator have asked for samples to review, and I have been to busy filling the great demand for our stuff to even think about or need a review.   I would suggest that you look at the under construction and completed build threads that use our parts for F-105, F-4, and F-15 Builds over the last 4 years...over half and for being a new company operating less than 4 years I am very proud of that fact.  We have had our products used on many contest models around the world that have placed and won, and in particular the Beautiful F-105G that won the "Route Pack 6a- USAF Award" at the NATS this year using our F-105G Super Set.  

 

I am also proud to say that we have invested over $100,000,  money that I could have been spent elsewhere,  into the 1/32 scale community to make products for the community that no on else even considered, or when made where wrong and inaccurate.    What is most discouraging is when members like Anthony make general negative comments without any basis in facts, just hearsay.   I don't like them but have learned it is part of the landscape of the internet where hearsay seems to be what forums are all about. The term 'Mixed Reviews" can mean anything from and Air bubble in the part  to the part being to difficult for the modeler to install or they broke the part.  Our Warranty gives the original GT Customer one free replacement of each part even is they break it themselves during a build, they just have to pay for postage.   Who else does that or even responds to customers on the internet.???... no one has a better warranty, no one!  Why, because it sucks to break a part of an expensive set and to have no other recourse than to buy a second set, hence our policy.  Now if someone does not like me because I am me then they have to get over it, because I ma not changing for anyone.

 

I would remind you that I was a member here first, and became a vendor because there was a need for the products we  make that no other company saw fit to bother with in the 1/32 community.  IN plain English I started doing this and put my modeling aside and money at risk for those here.  I feel though that over the past two years that this fact was forgotten by the staff here, and quite honestly I am very discouraged by your comments.   Why don't you ask Anthony what he means by his comment of 'Mixed Reviews" and discuss what that comment really means as fact, not innuendo?  I would think that such a discussion would be not only be of benefit to members, but to the Vendor as well.  

 

The discouraging side of going into business is the sort of comment made by Antony are purposely vague and intended to cast doubt on a companies products thereby negatively influencing those who might buy the products by someone who is not a customer.  The sites failure to challenge this type of innuendo behavior in reality only encourages it.  I thank those that have purchased and have stepped up to support what we do here based on the products they have bought, not some hearsay chat room or forum speculation.
