Getting started:

I'm walking a thin line between doing a Pearl harbor Defender, and doing an NMF pre-war bird. The basic finish of the plastic on the majority of the external surface as a texture to it that will all need to be sanded away to do any proper NMF, even foil. I'm not sure I've got that in me.

But I digress within the first post!

Here is the Allison 1710. This is a beautiful engine folks. While I am sure to come across some problems with this kit, the engine is not one of them. Highly detailed and well engineered it went together easy. The instructions are a little tough to follow but then again, I was doing this in poor lighting with a margarita in me ;)

Not going to detail this too much, nor spend too much time cleaning it up as I'll be sealing the little monster inside the cowling on final assembly.

The stacks are not in yet, those will get good attention. As well I'll spend some quality time on the radiator faces and rear plumbing as that stuff will be visible.

This build won't get to full steam until the 1/32 Mustang is off the bench, but then I will strive to make this a quick build.

Cheers~

Cool...

Pearl Harbour mate...either that or defrib for your heart following your stress over the NMF on your Stang. ( Which we all think is ace ;) )

Mind you that P40 NMF with pointy nose (?Prototype)does look nice.

Love watching the builds and your nice clear photos.

Cheers Matt

Ps Watched an old war doco the other day with footage of Hairless Joe in action...cool.

Gadzooks!

Hairless joe flying?

I must have this footage ;)

Um...flying not sure...maybe if you know the serial numbers...film is not in great nick...certainly start up and getting buckled in...plenty of gun camera footage of escort missions and training. Certainly saw a pilot getting dropped off into a jeep and walking over to the P47 with that famous nose art. Caught my eye it did ;) . Basically lots of promo/propoganda the allies did during the war.

I can easy send you a copy if you like. Just email me as we are...cough cough...digressing from your topic.

  • 3 weeks later...

Mustang is finally finished and I'm back on to the Tomahawk. I've decided on the NMF pre-war bird...like this one:

We'll see just how far off I hit it :) Might be a total nightmare!

Riveting the whole bird this week. The VFS surface detail is bold and crude, the rivets are helping a LOT to refine the detail and bring the surface a little elegance.

...and more rivets. All done with Rosie. Still some more to add here and there as well as a good sanding pass prior to the NMF. I added a few panel lines here and there where VFS had missed some and I decided to leave some of the incorrect lines in place for brevity's sake.

Also have most of the pit completed. There is the clear and present "floor" problem here directly inherited from the Trumpeter kit, which is rather disapointing. I am not going to attempt the fix.

Here are the side walls with some extras added: punched discs for misc details, scratched throttle quadrant and handles, new oxy hose, and misc plackards/dials from Mike Grant.

The pit still needs a new map case and some weathering, then I'll seal up the fuselage and start on the NMF. More soon.

When you have raised rivets do you have to use 'the rosie' from underneath? It looked like a spikey hardened wheel you push along so i'm curious as to how one gets raised rivets. :)

Looking good. Those placards really help offset uniformity in the cockpit. :) there's a busker in your local mall looking for the string from his guitar...he he ( I almost wrote G string :P wrong... potential for ambiguity.

cheers mate

The rivets are recessed, not raised. I just pushed Rosie along some pencil lines I measured up and drew in (most accurate some ficticious).

The pit will get some subtle weathering, not too much as I am trying to represent a pre-war hot rod.

:)

And yeah..it's a G string alright! What else eh!?!?!?!?!?!?

Chris,

"Old Crow" looks brilliant, maybe a silly question but do you need to seal the rub'n'buff?

Also, what do you use as a guide when you use Rosie?

Silly questions I know but a Cowan I am...

Thanks Vern,

I used Future throughout the finish, pre and post Rubb N Buff, then again to seal decals, and for touch ups here and there.

As guide with Rosie I usually depend on "the Force" to be honest. I use a flex-ruler when I have some challenge like rivet lines close to part edges etc, but mostly I guide the tool by hand along pencil lines. Now THOSE I use a ruler for!!
