Bstarr3
Honestly, Not anymore, I now prime and paint, I gave up burnishing, it was just an extra step. I had a lot of chipping issues on my P-40, the burnishing is a good base for primer though, but last couple I just primed and paint, I had chipping now. I have had good luck with using Stynilrez primer and Metal Air paint, they are both very thin and don't build up. I beleive Tamiya also makes a metal primer. Interesting. So stynylrez adheres well to the metal for you? I feel like I've had problems with it before. Do you do the acetone soak before priming?
Bstarr3
I use Tamiya paints for my roundels. Roundel red is XF-7 Flat Red and XF-9 Hull Red 75:25 Blue is XF-8 Flat Blue, XF-17 Sea Blue and XF-1 Flat Black. The ratio is approximately 75:15:10 I think. I sometimes use semi gloss black instead so it's not as flat. Yellow is XF-3 Flat Yellow and a drop of XF-7 Flat Red Hope that helps. Carl Thanks, Carl. I'll bear those in mind next time I'm buying paint.
Bstarr3
Work is still being done. All the stencils are now on, top and bottom. There's a few odd to add to the sides still, and the fuselage roundels and letters. Then we'll move on to some detailing. Took the masks off of the bomb bay and wheel wells. I hadn't seen them in a few weeks - they look nice! I plan to do a little salt weathering, or possibly liquid mask weathering, on the top side to tie the paint and decals all together to a similar degree of weathering. Based on my very positive experience with the black Tamiya panel liner, I bought the full set - brown, dark brown, grey, light grey. I will plan to use those as my primary weathering product on this, plus some pigments after the final satin coat. We're getting very close to finished!! gwana, BradG, Jeff and 5 others
BloorwestSiR
Looks great Brian. Nice job on the stencils too. Those are my usual downfall. Carl Bstarr3
Bstarr3
Looks great Brian. Nice job on the stencils too. Those are my usual downfall. Carl Thanks, Carl. Patience is the key with those HGW stencils. I apply them, hit them with Microsol, being careful not to rub down the edges too much, so there's something to pull up later, and leave them for at least several hours, or overnight. I pull the film back very slowly. If the decal starts to come with it, I put it back gently, trying to line up the image, and reapply Microsol and wait another few hours. Most of them came out very nicely with a patient approach. Some, however, did break up on removal, and those I just wiped away and left off or replaced with one of the kit decals. Their stencils are completely thorough and the carrier film is pretty thin on the small decals, so those came out ok as well. Overall, I'm happy with how they came out. Bstarr3
Lots of progress tonight. Almost finished! Got the rest of the markings down. In spite of careful preparation and used if microset/sol, I'm afraid the squadron markings are starting to show some silvering after only a day. I am leaving them alone for now. Stippled on some liked mask and sprayed all over with medium sea grey thinned 3:1 thinner:paint. Similar effect to salt watering Pin washed with Tamiya panel liners, mostly black and dark brown First try at oil dot filtering. Used burnt sienna, gold ochre, flesh, white, and pthalo blue. I would not recommend this latter color. The blue is way too intense. Gear, under wing bombs, and identification lights installed. Also got a coat of Liquitex artist's satin varnish on. I'm still amazed and how much difference it makes getting that high gloss off after decals. You can watch the realism increase as you spray! Standing in her own legs! Masking removed from the canopy Will be displayed similar to this, with panels off the port engine Edited March 17, 2018 by Bstarr3 LSP_Kevin, BradG and Jeff
hamfists nz
Was this going to be an operation Jericho mossie? Is that a 464 squadron marking?
Bstarr3
Was this going to be an operation Jericho mossie? Is that a 464 squadron marking? It is indeed 464 squadron, plane SB-V. The decal set includes both full id letters as well as ones cut in half by d-day stripes if you want to model it as a later version
TimHepplestone
Going to be an epic model this. How did you get the weathered effect on the wing and nose. Salt?
karimb
SUPERB Brian!! The salt weathering just ties everything in and the oil on the wings adds to the general fading and used look... It's a momentous event when a model stands on her legs for the first time and your mosquito sure looks poised to be a winner my friend! Bstarr3
Going to be an epic model this. How did you get the weathered effect on the wing and nose. Salt? Thanks Tim. I used a similar technique to salt weathering, except I used liquid latex as the mask instead of salt crystals. I tried it out on this kid after reading it on a build thread here, but I'm not sold on it just yet. It seems hard to get a true stippling effect with the mask, so you end up with larger sections of varied colors, instead of the nice evenly distributed effect you can achieve with salt. I think I'm going to play with it some more on a paint mule before I decide whether I'll use it again or not.
Bstarr3
Alright, I'm calling this one finished! I still need to figure out a display solution for this monster, but work on the kit itself is in the books. I took the best pictures I could get. I hope to find a way to shoot it better for a RFI post. Thanks all for following along with me. I appreciate your support and help.
