I may be a bit daft

Recommended Posts

Have just read a book about a local WWI pilot who ended the war with 18 victories, 1 kite balloon and 17 a/c. These being 1 Pfalz DIII, 1 Albatross DV and 15 Fokker DVII, all over a 5 month period in late 1918. He also flew countless bombing and strafing missions as well as bomber escort. These were with 10 squadron later renumbered to 210.

He re-enlisted into the RAF at the start of WWII and served in intelligence. Amongst other things he worked on was enigma and ultra. In helping to break these, he played a big part in decoding the information about Bodenplatte.

The book is called Camel Combat Ace and is about Edwin Swale CBE OBE DFC & Bar, born 1899 died 1978. He was born, lived and died not more than a couple of miles from where I live.

This is where the mad bit comes in. Never done a WWI a/c before as I have always been scared of doing the rigging. Have just ordered a WNW Camel Br1 and hopefully do it as one of the a/c that Edwin flew in one of his victories.

Welcome to the passion that is WW1 Aviation (in all shapes and forms) I've read a lot of books on the subject matter and am blown away by the era and look forward to my next book from this time ... any suggestions any-one? I also enjoy WW1 flight simulation with Rise of Flight and Wings over Flanders Fields ... so atmospheric simulations and last but not least WW1 scale modelling in 1/32 ... you are going to be in for a real treat getting your first WnW kit, still remember mine, it was the Junkers J.1 that I chose as an easy first step because it had no rigging to do ... but at the end of the day WW1 rigging is not that difficult so long as you research others builds and tips, you have done the right thing in buying your preferred Aircraft as a first WW1 model.

Googling and checking my local library online now for "Camel Combat Ace"

Enjoy.
