mz826
Now that the Hurricane is almost all finished, I thought I would get started on something a little newer. According to the box this one was released in 1972. A year after the Hurricane. Got started this evening with the removal of the parts from the trees and a bit of clean up. After removing the little bit of flash that was present, I did a little test fitting of the major parts. The only issues I ran into were the size and location of the locator pins on the wings and horizontal stabs. The pins are too long and the result is the seams not meeting up when the halves are put together. The wings pins and holes do not even line up. No problem though they have all been removed and sanded down and a proper join was possible. Anyone have any tips for this kit? Stay tuned and thanks for looking,Graeme. Guest
No tips, only questions. I have one in the stash also. The reason I never pulled the trigger on the Hase kits. I'm wondering if any of the Eduard PE will fit this ? I will be following along. Good luck my friend............Harv
LSP_Kevin
Wow, you just don't see too many of these built, but I guess with two new-tool kits on the market (more-or-less), there's no real value in hoarding them. I've got one too, so I'll be following your progress for sure Graeme. Kev
TimW
I have the Hase kit. But I have this exact one as well. Can't bring myself to get rid of it (nostalgia?) I also have several Revell Razorback P-47s. I will do something with those someday, also (especially now that the Trumpy Razorback is hard to find and usually prohibitively expensive). Will watch this with interest! Tim W.
mz826
I don't know why I enjoy these old kits so much but I do. I bought most of them when I was in University and now have a whole closet full. If I can build up a good representation of a Raiden, Hurricane, Mosquito with a little work I am happy. Thanks for following along guys! mz826
Here are a few updated progress pics. I was able to get the cockpit assembled and painted this week. I modified the seat a little as the kit one was a pretty poor representation of the actual seat. It still needs a little more cleaning up but is an improvement I think. I added a little detail to the cockpit walls as well. Seats belts will be added as well before its fully closed up. I am trying to improve the wheel wells with some more pronounced detail and am trying to build the wheel well tubs to improve the very basic offerings. I have never done this before so I wasn't sure which approach to take. How do you guys do it? Thanks again for looking in, Graeme.
mywifehatesmodels
Great to see these older kits still being built and you're doing it justice, too! John
BradG
Coming along nicely. I have to say I'd have probably flogged it off on ebay years ago when this and the Ki 61 were attaining astronomical prices, but it will be nice to see one built as I can't recall ever doing so. dennismcc
Great to see someone actually building one of these, the subject matter is one of my favourite Japanese aircraft and I think that I have 2 of the same kit in the stash, with the Hasagawa kit on the market replacing the old decals should be easier. Cheers Dennis Edit: Just checked Hannant's site and there does not seem to be any AM decals available. Edited August 3, 2013 by dennismcc
mz826
Thanks for the comments guys? Any tips for building those wheel wells?Am I headed in the right direction? Thanks!
dennismcc
Just boxing in the wheel wells will be an improvement, here's a link to a review of the Hasagawa Raiden showing the sprues with a fairly clear picture of how Hasagawa have portrayed the wells. http://www.internetmodeler.com/artman/publish/flaviation/Hasegawa-1-32-Mitsubishi-J2M3-Raiden-Jack-Type-21.php Cheers Dennis Edited August 3, 2013 by dennismcc
Daywalker
Cheers, very intriguing build! I have the Hasegawa kit on my bench right now- if there's any detail shots you would like of that kit's parts I'd be happy to take some photos for you. Daywalker
Roger that! It's going well, finished painting on the markings yesterday. Haven't posted any updates in a while, guess I ought to do that soon!
