PBY-5A Catalina (Cutaway)

That would be very kind of you and I would greatly profit for my 1/48 Cat. So, yes please! :)

Greets, Jonas

I'm sure the hardcore rigging experts would have lots of ways of doing this, but the method I've used is very easy and 'painless'.

Materials used for the 'Ladder' antenna...

I decided to use black fishing line for the antenna, mostly because it's very easy to 'thread' the stiff line into the small tube pieces.

For the tubing I've heated some white cotton swap plastic tubing and stretched it into the desired thickness.

Then cut it into small pieces and thread them onto the line. No glue is used.

For the anchor points I've made some small eyelets from thin steel wire, drilled and CA glued in place.

The loops are threaded through the small tubing, Holes are then drilled in the hull and the antennas are pulled through the holes

and out of the cutaway openings. in this way, I was able to put some tension to the main antenna cables, to get the right amount

of curvature on the main antenna. Everything is fixed using CA glue.

For the middle antenna, between the 'ladders', Modelkasten Stretch Rigging Wire is used, not as easy to thread, but it has the

advantage of not being flat as EZ-line.

Hope it makes sense? Kent

Kent can i congratulate you on a magnificent job, this build is an absolute stunning rendition of an iconic aircraft using an outstanding kit.

I make no apologies because as and when the time comes I will be mercilessly plagiarising your methods hoping to get at least somewhere near your result.

The lighting is a real show stopper, allowing all that lovely detail to be seen in all its glory.

Great work in every way, you should be justifiably proud.

The 'hidden' battery in the engine nacelle...

This is an excellent build, I ave really enjoyed following this

Seeing that battery... There is a trend in railway modelling circles to equip locos with sound chips. I have been wondering about bunging a motor and a sound chip into my P-51

  • 3 months later...

This years Air Show in Denmark was visited by G-PBYA 'Miss Pick Up' - Of course I had to have a closer look at this very nice 'Girl'.

She's turning 75 this year, but she looks like she's still in good shape.

The interior has some alterations from the original and the danish museum Cat is more authentic, but stil, it's a Catalina....

Kent, did you show this in ready for inspection or did I miss it?

Bryan

No Bryan, I haven't finished it yet.

I want to make a diorama'ish display stand, I've put on my 'thinking cap' because it's a bit tricky, but I will get there...eventually.

Hmmm... apologize for the update in the wrong tread, once again...

Work has begun on some crew members for the Catalina.

The intention is to make a group of various characters, aka a 'motley crew' as they are show in the photos from Bluie West in Greenland.

The Norwegian Bernt Balchen is the Chubby fellow in the middle. Different styles of clothing, hats and even some with a beard...

Another crew from an arctic Catalina, for inspiration...

The 'Motley crew' members. I've replaced some heads etc... Almost ready for painting.

Cheers: Kent
