IMCTH P51 Build Log

There are already some really nice builds of these, but still thought it would be fun to post.  The kit has some really nice Stainless Photo etch.  I found the #400 Tamiya Diamond File to be a nice time saver to take down the attachment nubs.  Also found early on that a Thin Super Glue and a forked applicator is the only way to go, at least so far.

Wing flap built and mounted to the wing with .04 stainless wire.

Flapped dropped a little show some of the hinge detail.  Still need to trim hinge pin and clean up a little with some acetone.  So far seems to be a really well designed kit.

Guest Peterpools

Great to see another IMTCH kit in the works. John Smith built all three with the accompanying Tamiya kit and each was an awesome build here on LSP.

Looking forward to following along with great interest.

Keep 'em coming

Peter

Thanks, been studying John's builds (what inspired me) and Brain Colton has a nice blog of his build too; both very helpful.20170506_2045191_zpsd2xfhjzf.jpg

Aileron and wing cap test fitted.  Bad build day, keep doing the bends for port aileron on the starboard one.  Instructions show port wing assembly with an alternate part for the starboard side.  Should have started port first.  The metal can take a reverse correction without fracturing, but I wouldn't count on it every time.  May have redo the wing tip for better joint with wing cap, but no huge issues.

Not a bunch of progress - wingtip fit well still needs buffed out, but going to wait till I am closer to putting on a clear metal primer.

There are two different struts included one for gear up and another for gear down.  Also a couple parts for the that go in the wheel well.

I drilled out the end of the piece between the formers to better accommodate the pin of another part the joins it after the main gear is installed.

Hi Chris,

Built out the second wing and started the armament.  I really like your build and am going to paint similarly to what you did.  I've never worked with white metal before.  I got a Dremel sanding polishing set the used the various attachments on the .50 cal trays and put some auto primer on them.  The ammo bins aren't glued yet and I was thinking of doing the trays and bins in Zinc Chromate Yellow.

Beginnings of the wing armament.  The auto primer scratched off the white metal easily with my finger nail, so I had to go with an acid based etching primer.  I try to knock down some grain of the primer with 1000 grit sand paper.  Painted both the .50 mounts and ammo trays WEM Chromate Yellow.  Used Alclad on the ammo with black near the front edge trying to outline the copper part of the shell.  Also had correct a major build error on the ammo tray; it was folder backwards. :(   Aber P-51 barrels.

Looking really good!

It is so easy to bend a piece the wrong way, I have found that the instructions are printed very lightly and can be hard to see.

The turned barrels will great once installed.

Keep up the great work.

Thanks Chris

Sneak one more in tonight.  Test fitted in the wings.  Pretty tight with everything painted, but it all fit like glove.  Probably all the forward progress I'll get this weekend.  Need to repair and clean up the wings.  Can't decide whether I want to pull a clear primer on the stainless.
